Name: Kristin Battistoni
Office sought: Tax collector
Party affiliation: Republican
Town of residence: Haddam
Family: Since moving to Haddam in 2003, my husband Mike and I have made many wonderful friends in town. We have become deeply involved in the community and volunteer for many organizations. I first ran for tax collector when my daughter Brigitte and son Alex began kindergarten. This was a way for her to get back into the work force after staying home with them. They are now starting their last year at Haddam-Killingworth Middle School.
Experience: Over the past eight years, I have made some updates to how the office is run. Taxpayers now have the capability to use credit cards not only online but in the office. Our website has been upgraded so people can now look up payment histories for the past three years. An IRS function has also been added so residents can see what was paid for that given year. I have also started using a lock box during collection time. With this change, we are able to have payments processed much quicker and have payments deposited in a timely manner during our busy time. These technology changes have helped me keep the collection rate close to 99 percent.
Top issues if elected: My focus over the past eight years has been to really get residents to understand the process of taxes. I want residents to know what needs to be done when dealing with the state Department of Motor Vehicles, what needs to be done when buying and selling a house or moving out of town. I love working in the tax office, meeting new residents and seeing friends that come for a visit every year. Working in the community of Haddam is a special opportunity that not many have the privilege of doing.
