Bravo for the citizens’ petition killing the new state tax law package. Especially thanks for killing reimposing the state portion of the food tax.
As Deseret News columnist Jay Evensen says, the food tax doomed the tax reform. Our Utah senior coalition led the battle to put the food tax repeal on the ballot way back in the early 1980s. While our effort lost, what was true then is true now: the food tax hurts the poor. No combination of special help programs can do what the repeal does — helping those in greatest need every time they make a food purchase.
Reform away lawmakers. Just leave the food tax alone.
